Chapter Seven

Traveling Up the Coast

“Dad? Dad!” Kevin’s eyes shot open as he rolled over to see his daughter shaking him awake.

“Anna!” He sat up, rubbing his eyes. “What is it, honey? Are you hurt? Is David alright?”

“It’s Monica,” she replied. “She’s been throwing things at the door for almost an hour now.”

Kevin sighed heavily. “Alright, I’ll take care of it. Go back to bed, honey.”

“Bed?” Anna looked confused. “It’s almost time to go to school.”

Kevin turned to look at the clock and groaned. He must’ve slept through his alarm; he and Monica were already supposed to be on the road by now.

Kevin stood up and followed Anna out to the hallway. “Alright, just go and have breakfast. I’ll deal with Monica.”

As Anna went down the stairs, he walked down to the master bedroom. The chair was still firmly in place, locking her inside. As he went to move it, something crashed against the door.

“Monica! What are you doing?” Kevin hurried to open the door but as soon as he did, a glass vase came flying at his head. He ducked, narrowly missing the vase as it crashed against the wall behind him. Stepping carefully around the broken glass, he came into the room just as Monica was picking up a glass ashtray.

“Put that down!” Kevin shouted. “Why are you breaking everything in here?”

“You locked me in here!” Monica screamed.

“Keep your voice down,” he told her. “I had to, Monica. I knew you’d try to leave, and I’m not going to let that happen. Remember, it’s either this or jail. Get dressed and come downstairs. You’re going to rehab, even if I must carry you all the way there.”

Kevin wandered into his closet and pulled out a suit and a pair of shoes. “Get ready and be downstairs in twenty minutes. I mean it, Monica.”

Stepping carefully back out into the hall, Kevin went to the guest room and took a quick shower, then changed into his suit. He wanted to make sure he looked the part of the billionaire husband when they showed up to the Wellness Center, just to make sure Monica was treated fairly.

After he was dressed, Kevin went downstairs to get a quick cup of coffee before Monica came down. Knowing her, it would be another hour before she arrived downstairs.

David and Anna were sitting at the kitchen table, looking concerned.

“Is everything alright, Dad?” David asked. “Are you and Monica having a fight?”

“We’re not fighting, son. She’s just… having a bad day.”

David and Anna looked at each other.

Kevin sat down at the table. “Okay, she’s having more than a bad day. And I’m taking her to a place where she can… relax.”

“Like a spa?” Anna asked.

“Yes. Exactly like a spa. She’ll come back feeling refreshed and happy. We’re leaving today, so I might not be back until late.”

“That’s okay,” Anna told him. “We’ll be fine on our own.”

Kevin smiled and picked up his mug of coffee. But before he could take a sip, Monica stormed into the kitchen.
